Q1: How Do I Tell Which Tables Have Identities in Sybase?
A1: You can tell if a table has identities one of two ways:

1. sp_help [tablename]: there is a field included in the sp_help output
describing a table called “Identity.” It is set to 1 for identity fields, 0 otherwise.

2. Within a database, execute this query:

  • select object_name(id) “table”,name “column”, prec “precision”
  • from syscolumns
  • where convert(bit, (status & 0x80)) = 1
  • go

this will list all the tables and the field within the table that serves as an identity, and the size of the identity field.

Q2: Explain About The Sybase Group?
A2: Sybase exclusively focuses on mobilizing and managing information. It is known to be the third largest database management company after Oracle and IBM. Sybase products on Investment banking are well known to the world over and it offers many customized solutions for business intelligence.

Q3: State Some Of The Products Of Sybase?
A3: Sybase has worlds leading products some of them are

  • ASE
  • Avantgo
  • Power builder and power designer
  • SQL ianywhere
  • Sybase IQ
  • Sybase replication server
  • Sybase RTE
  • Sybase data federation
  • Main frame connect

Q4: What Is The Depth Of Triggers?
A4: 16 Levels i.e. 16 nested triggers can be there in Sybase

Q5: State Some Of The Criticism About Sybase Iq?
A5: Sybase storage systems are optimized for Dataware housing applications where data cannot be modified can be modified by searching and accessing the data. Its column based search criteria gives high performance for search but it negates the writing capability to the data. Performance for row based relational based databases is worse because it is very difficult for updating and modifying them.

Q6: What Are Triggers? Why Do We Use Them? Diff Types Of Triggers? What Are Magic Tables?
A6: A trigger is a stored procedure bound to a table, which is implicitly executed when a user attempts to modify data with an insert, delete, or update command.

Use :   i. Validation purpose
ii.Referential integrity

Type of trigger: –
i. update
ii. delete

Two tables are created at the time of trigger execution
1. Inserted
2. Deleted  which are called magic tables.

Q7: What Are Stored Procedures?
A7: Stored procedure is a database object which is collection of SQL statements or constructs. Parameters can be passed and returned, and error codes may be checked. Stored procedures, after their first execution, become memory resident and do not need to be reparsed, reoptimized, or recompiled. So they are faster.

Q8: Explain What Is Update Statistics In Sybase?
A8: The update statistics command helps the server make the best decisions about which indexes to use when it processes a query, by providing information about the distribution of the key values in the indexes. The update statistics commands create statistics, if there are no statistics for a particular column, or replaces existing statistics if they already exist. The statistics are stored in the system tables systabstats and sysstatistics.

Q9: Explain The Structure Of Adaptive Server Enterprise?
A9: Structure of ASE installation hosts several databases and it comprises of one data server. Also system files occupy only one meta data. User databases are stored in the form of tables. Security and information privacy can be protected by setting permissions.

Q10: How do check the current running processes?
A10: ps –eaf

Q11: Can u create your own sps for system wise?
A11: Yes, we can, say for example we create the SPs to check the fragment level etc., etc.,

Q12: What u need to do is issue an ASE kill command on the connection then un-suspend the db?
A12: select lct_admin(“unsuspend”,db_id(“db_name”))

Q13: What command helps you to know the process running on this port, but only su can run this command?
A13: /var/tmp/lsof | grep 5300 (su)

netstat -anv | grep 5300 (anyone)

Q14: For synchronizing the logins from lower version to higher version, just take the 11.9.2 syslogins structure, go to 12.5 higher version server?
A14: create the table named as logins in the tempdb will this structure, run bcp in  into this login table, next use master to run the following commands, insert into syslogins select *,null, null from tempdb..logins

Q15: How to delete UNIX files which are more than 3 days old?
A15: You must be in the parent directory of snapshots and execute the below command

find snapshots – type f -mtime  +3 –exec rm{}\;

            find /backup/logs/ -name daily_backup* -mtime +21 -exec rm –f{}\;

Q16: How to find the time taken for rollback of the processed?
Q16: kill 826 with status only

Q17: What is ASA UltraLite in Sybase?
A17: UltraLite is a version of ASA that runs on handheld devices.

Windows 95/98, NT, 2000, CE
Palm Computing platform
WindRiver VxWorks
Symbian EPOC

Q18: What is the Difference Between Replication Server and SQL Remote in Sybase?
A18: Both SQL Remote and Replication Server perform replication. SQL Remote was originally part of the Adaptive Server Anywhere tool kit and is intended for intermittent replication. (The classic example is that of a salesman connecting on a daily basis to upload sales and download new prices and inventory.) Replication Server is intended for near real-time replication scenarios.

Q19: Using large raw partitions with Replication Server on Unix in Sybase
A19: It is a good practice with production installations of Replication Server on Unix that you use raw partitions for the stable devices. This is for just the same reason that production ASE’s use raw partitions. Raw devices can be a maximum of 2GB with replication server up to release 11.5. (I have not checked 12.)

In order to utilise a raw partition that is greater than 2GB in size you can do the following (remember all of the cautionary warnings about trying this sort of stuff out in development first!):

add partition firstpartition on ‘/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0’ with size 2024
add partition secondpartition on ‘/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0’ with size 2024
starting at 2048

Notice that the initial partition is sized at 2024MB and not 2048. I have not found this in the documentation, but replication certainly seems to have a problem allocating a full 2GB. Interestingly, do the same operation through Rep Server Manager and Sybase central caused no problems at all.

Q20: What is the difference between an LTM and a RepAgent in Sybase?
A20: Log Transfer Managers (LTMs) and RepAgents are the processes that transfer data between ASE and the Replication Server.

LTMs were delivered with the first releases of Replication Server. Each LTM is a separate process at the operating system level that runs along side ASE and Replication Server. As with ASE and Replication Server, a RUN_ and configuration file is required for each LTM. One LTM is required for each database being replicated.

Along with ASE 11.5 a new concept was introduced, that of RepAgent. I am not sure if you needed to use RepServer 11.5 as well, or whether the RepAgents could talk to earlier versions of Replication Server. Each RepAgent is, in effect, a slot-in replacement for an LTM. However, instead of running as separate operating system process, it runs as a thread within ASE. Pretty much all of the requirements for replication using an LTM apply to the RepAgents. One per database being replicated, etc. but now you do not need to have separate configuration files.

Q21: Why am I running out of locks on the replicate side in Sybase ?
A21: Sybase replication works by taking each transaction that occurs in the primary dataserver and applying to the replicate. Since replication works on the transaction log, a single, atomic, update on the primary side that updates a million rows will be translated into a million single row updates. This may seem very strange but is a simple consequence of how it works. On the primary, this million row update will attempt to escalate the locks that it has taken out to an exclusive table lock. However, on the replicate side each row is updated individually, much as if they were being updated within a cursor loop. Now, Sybase only tries to escalate locks from a single atomic statement (see ASE Qx.y), so it will never try to escalate the lock. However, since the updates are taking place within a single transaction, Sybase will need to take out enough page locks to lock the million rows.

So, how much should you increase the locks parameter on the replicate side? A good rule of thumb might be double it or add 40,000 whichever is the larger. This has certainly worked for us.

Q22: What is the Drawbacks of Normalization?
A22: Although most successful databases are normalized to some degree, there is one substantial drawback of a normalized database: reduced database performance. The acceptance of reduced performance requires the knowledge that when a query or transaction request is sent to the database, there are factors involved, such as CPU usage, memory usage, and input/output (I/O). To make a long story short, a normalized database requires much more CPU, memory, and I/O to process transactions and database queries than does a denormalized database. A normalized database must locate the requested tables and then join the data from the tables to either get the requested information or to process the desired data. A more in-depth discussion concerning database performance occurs in Hour 18, “Managing Database Users.”

Q23: What happen when we delete the table using Trigger?
A23: The delete row will entered into the Deleted table inside the trigger

Q24: What is Rollback trigger in a Trigger?
A24: You can roll back triggers using either the rollback trigger statement or the rollback transaction statement (if the trigger is fired as part of a transaction). However, rollback trigger rolls back only the effect of the trigger and the statement that caused the trigger to fire; rollback transaction rolls back the entire transaction

Q25: Compare IN and EXISTS?
A25: in allow duplicate values and sub query have oe column, exists not allow duplicates and inner query can have multi columns

Q26: What is ceiling()?
A26: Smallest integer greater than or equal to specified value

Q27: What is the stored procedure to view current lock and processes respectively?
A27: sp_lock and sp_who

Q28: Compare Join and SubQuery in performance?
A28: Generally Join queries consume more memory than sub query. Sub query in turn involve intermediate table creation so affects performance, because of high I/Os fetches need for processing. If the RAM memory is more, then the Joins can be used instead of sub queries. Under memory constraints we can go for sub queries.

Sometimes sub queries are flattened to join to improve the performance. Also making the outer query to compare inner query with equality option can materialize the subquery.

Q29: What is an advantage to using a stored procedure as opposed to passing an SQL query from an application ?
A29: A stored procedure is pre-loaded in memory for faster execution. It allows the DBMS control of permissions for security purposes. It also eliminates the need to recompile components when minor changes occur to the database.

Q30: What is Sybase ?
A30: Sybase exclusively focuses on mobilizing and managing information. It is known to be the third largest database management company after Oracle and IBM. Sybase products on Investment banking are well known to the world over and it offers many customized solutions for business intelligence.

Q32: What is the difference in storage type of numeric and decimal data types in sybase ?
A32: The numeric and decimal types are identical in all respects but one: Only numeric types with a scale of 0 can be used for the IDENTITY column.
